Re: any health problems from working with chemicals all day?
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 1:27 PMGreat question, I love it!
I have been in this business for 10 years I have never personally had any problems to speak of ever, with chemicals. But I have seen allergic reactions from customers, ei they lie about what is on hair, or allergic to color, perm. But that is what test areas are for, and release forms.
How ever, I did know a gal years ago when I first started doing hair at a chain salon (shall remain nameless for ego reasons) anyway she had started to get bad open soars on her hands from them always being wet and in water. But you really have to be smart which she admitted later it was a skin condition that was exasberated by being in water, to no avail she recieved medicine and was fine eventually but be smart it is your career.
Point being always wear gloves when working with perms and color, rinse out combs after being in barbacide and you should be fine. I just recently started using gloves with perms the black kind that you can feel hot/cold thru and they are great.
When I first started I had to get my hands working or wrists were in a bit of pain just getting used to doing and using muscles I had never used before. Of coarse I am sure there is a risk as with any job but like when mixing bleach don't stick your head in it and inhale (silly, but I have seen colorists do this) fumes. Perm fumes have came along way too. Also if you find yourself allergic to chemicals you can as alot of top salons do now you can be a colorist or just a hairstylist. Which is cool then you don't have to worry about these things just do haircuts. -

Re: any health problems from working with chemicals all day?
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 8:47 PMWoooo whoooo!!! We got someone other than Prim and myself to post! Yippie!! Like Prim I really haven’t had any health problems. I’ve seen some reactions to clients with hair color but that’s all. I girl that I know used to do hair. Also had reactions to chemicals on her hands and had to be very carful. In the winter I notice that my had get a little more dryer but nothing a little lotion can’t fix up! My owner of my salon has had a lot of back problems too... Its just we stand all day and really are in the same position. Hands and arms above us, I guess this can cause some problems. And I have had a small amount of back pain myself. BUT its nothing to make me want to leave this business! I think its awesome your considering this wonderful profession!! GOOD LUCK... and stick it out through the Beauty school days they can get ruff.. Unless u go to “the school” the PM school... AWESOME!! Let us know what happens!! -

Re: any health problems from working with chemicals all day?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 12:20 PMI think it would be easier on your spirit you have great bit of satisfaction in knowing that while your still serving people it is in a different way your helping them to feel and look better. I commend you for working at a restaurant, I could never do that hard work. I defienatly think it would be easier on back ect. It does take some getting used to standing still in one place but your also bending rinsing, ect. But you have some down time as a stylist while building, or assitsting. But it is hard work don't get me wrong!
You should ask a stylist in your area if you can mentor for a day or a week. Or apply as a receptionist in a salon like a day a week to see if you;ll like it. I did that as a receptionist, I got all kinds of tips, from stylists moneitary and work related.

Re: any health problems from working with chemicals all day?
Mon, February 27, 2006 - 9:16 PMSome people can get respiratory problems due to the fumes from perms, color, or artificial nails. I have been doing research myself on the web about health issues related to color. Some studies show that while there were no significant cancer risks for clients, haircolorists were at higher risk for bladder cancer and other types. ALWAYS wear gloves, but the fumes are an issue.
