Hello,
I am brand new, so I appreciate any feedback or advice.
I am trying to get into an esthetician program, and I am in my early 40`s. I am getting a lot of negativity from family about this choice. I am currently in a teacher credentail program and no one can understand why I would give that up for something they have never heard of, no benefits. They all seem to think it is only for bimbos and I will never make any money or find a job, etc, etc. There are no absolutes in life, but I just really want to try this. Has anyone come accross the same reaction from family/friends, and how did you defend your position? I feel so frustrated and so tired of arguing with people.

Re: Shame in Beauty Industry?
Sat, December 3, 2005 - 4:40 AMi am getting the same reaction from my family.
i have so much more "potential"
well maybe i dont want a job that consumes every minute of my day so i can whore myself out to a profession that sucks me dry. the shut up when i say this but i know they still dont get it. especially when i always have been on honor roll in every other major i have tried...but whatever. fuck them they dont have to go to work to do it.
would you call any of the famous stylist stupid? they are richer probably than anyone in your family or mine that is dishing out the negativity.
i think you should do what makes you happy. its not a huge investment $$ wise or time wise. so if you dont like your life is all the more enriched with another perspective...and you can give yourself a kickin haircut! hee hee

Re: Shame in Beauty Industry?
Sat, December 3, 2005 - 8:28 AMActually, estheticians are a up and coming profession. You can work in plastic surgeons offices, spas, hair salons, resorts, and even some "dental" spas are offering teeth whitening and facials. So poo on your family, kidding. It will be hard at first but if you continue to get additional training and some companies have on the job training, insurance, ect. you cannot go wrong. WHat other career, not job, career can you achieve the freedom to travel, make your own schedule, have the unlimited earning potential, it all comes down to you and what you put into this field is what you get in return. The beauty industry, massage, ect are the ONLY field with a license to touch besides Dr's and nurses. You have so much potential it is not even funny in this field. But you must love people, and have a great work ethic, patience, preserverence, and with you question it sounds like you have the potential. So I say don't worry about others. I put traditional college on hold for a year when I was outta high school to do this to cntinue to pay for my education in Marketing. I have been doin this for 10 years and have never had the need to finish my degree. I have owned my own salon, been in management for other companies, worked on commision, traveled, learned, right now I am going with the company I owned to teach classes at local beauty schools about the imortance of retail, how to classes, I am and have done things in the field I NEVER thought possible. So google the income for esthitiacians for youre family and go for it already!!!

Re: Shame in Beauty Industry?
Sat, December 3, 2005 - 12:44 PMThanks for all the advice and "pep" talk. I know peoples' attitudes will change when the dough starts comin' in. I have no doubt this is a growing field and a great time to make the transition. But you know how people are, especially men, and older ones at tht. They are just comfortable with the predictable. Yawn. I also like the freedom it can offer.
Thanks again and I may post some more questions later. -

Re: Shame in Beauty Industry?
Sun, December 4, 2005 - 5:43 AMYeah I can get a bit Peppy when it comes to this subject. I hear it so often. I moved from the west coast to the south and here alot of people look at this business as just go to cosmo school ya get married and have babies and open a shop in there house. Not to generalize or anything but I have came across that. It's like it is not a career. It can take a while for the "dough" but it may not, it all depends on your location, ect. But my first job, within three months I was built with a semi full book, and made as much as my mom who'd been at her job for 15 years, making $17 bucks an hour. So I mean between tips, commissions, ect hell I was doin good for a 21 year old? ANyway, any questions are welcome here thats why I wanted this tribe!!! Thanks and good luck to you!
