I have been obsessed lately of the styles from the 1940's and 1950's because the beauty shop was such a staple in the american womans life. The styles where so structured yet avant garde they has a feel to them I feel the shampoo set has made a comeback in a small way for fall runway and salon trends. I am reading a book now called big hair and it is about an anthropologist doing a study on the beauty shop and it's staple in society.

i paid attention when i was modeling and i wanna do what they do... so i want to go to beauty school.
so there are 2 ways to do it right? regular courses where you have to go for 12 to 18 months and learn hair, nails, skin - the works - even if you just want to do hair... and then there's the competency courses where you just learn hair and get your license based on your competency - whether that's in a few months or the full year and a half.
what's the best route and can i be licensed with just the competency course?
also, what's the differences between a school like beau monde or paul mitchell?

I had a girl last week that had super curly kinky hair wanted a straightener and color all the same day. I said uh I dont think so. She went on to say her last stylist did both in one day bleached out her hair to a nasty orangey blonde and straightened it. I told her I could do one or the other but not both in one day let alone in one month.

So she opted for the straightener. I had her sign a release form, and told her since her hair was soo curly I could not guarntee all the curl would be gone unless she flat irons it or styles it. She said fine. Well of course it just relaxed her curl to a soft wave since it was ssooo kinky, which was fine because she flat irons every day. I used quantum 2 steps that is all we have at our shop for this procedure. So it looked like a relaxed perm just a slight wave to it. She was happy.

Well she calls and is on my books for the following sunday for hilites, she came in I told the only thing I'd color her hair with was a demi color she wanted brown with her brassy blonde for the hilite. I did not want to but I did it signed another release form, it looked good left the brass as a hilite, and used color sync all over to tone out brass on the rest. She calls today and now wants me to perm, yes a PERM her hair. She says her husband saw her straighter hair and wants it curly again because it is straight on the ends and top regrowth section but curly in the middle. I am like what??? Great what happened?

Oh mi, so I have her come in to see this hair?? Wet it and it is still a nice slight wave even scalp to ends. Not as she described, so I told her absolutly not that the only thing I would do as a professional would be to do some treatments and that is all, she was upset when she left because she didnot know what to do?

Well she left refused the treatments, and I'd say about an hour later on my break I went downstairs and saw her at the other hair shop in the mall getting a PERM!!! Oh mi gosh can you believe it. 3 chemical services in 3 weeks not even 3 weeks. It takes all kinds huh.

Hello,
I am brand new, so I appreciate any feedback or advice.
I am trying to get into an esthetician program, and I am in my early 40`s. I am getting a lot of negativity from family about this choice. I am currently in a teacher credentail program and no one can understand why I would give that up for something they have never heard of, no benefits. They all seem to think it is only for bimbos and I will never make any money or find a job, etc, etc. There are no absolutes in life, but I just really want to try this. Has anyone come accross the same reaction from family/friends, and how did you defend your position? I feel so frustrated and so tired of arguing with people.
Had It Up To Here

it's always been the case that when we need to order, she complains and acts like she doesn't have the money to pay.
in the past we've waited until the last possible minute to order, and then have to pay a LOT for our orders.
so i've voluteered to do inventory, and put together an order once a month.
and said coworker is still carping about money and how she can't pay.
i try to remind her that it's bettet to spend $75 now that $150 later, but she still complains.
i'd love to cut her loose, but the color we use is so expensive that it makes it easier to share, except for this one issue. also, there's not a lot of space in our salon for each of us to ahve our own stock.
what would you do?

So when I stopped working for myself I forgot what is like to work with others who don't play fair.

I work for a large chain now mostly for beni's but I enjoy it. First time I have worked for a large chain type salon. I have worked there for a few months now since I sold my business. Anyway, there is this woman who has worked for the company for years like most of the women which I feel is important, but anyway sidetracked again. She is purposefully sabotaging me and undermining me in front of my clients and any new ones I have done.

I need a way to tackfully tell her to F off. We donot have a direct salon manager as of yet (not Interested in it) so I cannot tell her/him.

She is basically the type that complains about having clients, then complains about not having them, very pessimestic. She has gone as far as changing my books, looked at my totals for the day, told customers in front of me that I am new, uh hello new to company not to hair. Just crap like that. She calls on her days off to find out if I am busy (asks the receptionist). I did a hilites on a lady she cut 6 months ago and has had it out for me for days now. She thinks that just because she does someone that they are her client, I have told her a client is not YOUR client until they ahve sat in your chair and requested you at least four times. She laughed.

My question is how much of a bitch can I be working for a company, I mean as a boothrenter I'd know how to handle her but this is a new ball game for me. I have been lucky my 10 years in the field I have learned to speak my mind but I am kinda scared to I may get fired or something or start a riot? Being newer I dont want to start on a bad foot.

She is older has mainly shampoo set crowd doesnot wax, foil, do men, ect she is very noisey. So I need a firm yet polite way to tell her to leave me alone. She also wants to see pictures of my boyfriend, constantly asks personal questions, which at first I was polite and asnswered but now I just say I dont talk about my personal life at work, I am here to talk hair not about me. I asked the lady who used to be manager about it at fiorst I thought I was being pariniod and she assured me that she does have it out for me like all new people. So I'm like great???

So thanks any advice, Ill probably just ignore her but ya know a new salon, you want to deflect any problems. But if it was my shop I'd tell her to get over it. But I guess I know my answer on what to do but???

I just won myself a new client by not choosing to not color a new clients hair and communicating with her. But...

This may have happened to you it, but it really reminded me why I am in this business, I had forgotten that it is not to serve but it is to share, communicate and learn.

History: The client called and made an appointment for a foil hilite and haircut and style. I had never done her hair, she ended up on my book. She came in a had been somewhere else to get her foils done they had did a beautiful job 2 weeks prior, she disagreed, she thought it was too drab, thru an hour long consultation I found out she had been colorist hopping and salon hopping as well as kitchen coloring. She had been to several local salons trying to fix this problem that another salon had made. And it keep going from there, and so on. If she didnot like something she'd go somewhere else for a year now maybe longer.

I found out she had had a straightener put on her hair, she had been pulled thru a cap, bleached, her base was lightened and foiled another time, she had it all colored dark brown and re hilited all over, and more you name it she'd ask for it. She had had all these sevices done within this year! Lord her hair was in bad shape :(

I explained to her why she could not have anymore chemicals put on her head for at the very least 6-8 weeks til she had many
conditioning treatmeants a good cut, and some outgrowth to color. She said that none of the other stylists had asked her a thing they just did the service, and asked not so much as a history about her. She just let them do there vision she said?

So just think if I hadn't taken the time to ask, her hair could have become a liabilty from the moment she was in my chair.

So I cut and styled her hair yeah I wasted an hour and lost out on about a hundred bucks or more but she was excited, booked a series of conditioning treatments, and let me cut and style her hair.

So I won a client, yeah. But on the same note, I just am scared of her as a client too because of her history, and she said she hated stylists, and but that she appreciated my honesty and integrity as a professional.

So at what point do you tell someone no more color or I don't think I can help you with your services anymore or ect.

I just want to be prepared for her. So does anyone else here believe in a good consultation, for services, waxing, ordering, anything? Or have anything to share on this subject?

She will probably go somewhere else and be there liabilty but who knows I am confident enough to tell someone no but at what point can you trust them to be honest. My coworker told me to tell her I would cut and style but I would not preform chemicals on her, so sounds good to me but even a liabilty form I wouldn't fell comfortable with her history.
Thanks ;)

Hello all I've been a Hair Stylist for 4 years now, worked for the same owner for 6. My currant Salon is in a tinny tinny town. And it has been changing for the past couple of months(year), for the worst. I am friends with the owner and respect her. However I know I have a lot more potential than small town salon. I've had education all over the Us. I'm totally booked, but yet feel in a rut, at my small salon. Just recently a girl I've know from Beauty School, has offered me a chance to come work for her. She is opening a new Salon in a BIG city. Up scale, classy, trendy, but comfortable. More benefits (currently I have nothing no insurance, no 401k ,nothing), more paid vacation, (I only get 1 week paid) its a down town Salon, with lots of backing from other business owners. I feel like its a great opportunity. I guess what I'm looking for is how do I leave the only place I've pretty much known? I feel like I'm not being loyal or something. I know I probably sound crazy. My owner and been truly wonderful, yet she has had her moments. And she's been know to get a little crazy when stylist try to leave. I need some advise. I pretty much know what I HAVE to do to help me grow as a stylist. Maybe some of you other there, can help me since I haven't been in the business all that long,, and have only ever worked at 1 salon,,,,,,,help my nerves and my guilt.

It has been a long trip. I took an well needed extended vacation... A long road trip across country, with the intentions of moving (maybe) well it is true you can never go back. So I am back in my humble town, completely lost on what to do now. Sold my business, thank goodness a sense of relief. But now what.

My clients had been freaking out on where I had been, worried and all. I just didn't feel the need to serve them anymore. I am great at what I do but I guess alot of people in the field have felt that way...the need to start over after a long trip. So I haven't returned any of their phone calls.

I love the industry but I am tiring with being behind the chair, makes since I've been at it 10 years now. Long time. Learned alot. But ready to move on.

I had been interviewing at salons around my town and they are crazy, what has happened to our field. The shops here either want to charge you booth rental at an outragous amount, pay you 5.15 an hour or a low commission. Such a shame.

Where is a girl to work. I want benefits, retirement, ect I am tired of paying health costs out of pocket, and not knowing what my income will be day to day. Could it be I have grown out of my position as a stylist?

Has anyone else here felt a need to move on out of this business like it doesn't serve you to serve others anymore?
